1、基本刀型　在这里所见到的太刀的形状据说是在平安时代完成的，但镰仓时代中期的文献中已经有打刀的记载。相对于重武装时所佩带的太刀，轻武装时所用的刀剑就有了各种各样的名称。刀和太刀的区別是：当刀是刃向下佩于腰间的时候，刻在茎上的作者铭处于外侧的刀称之为太刀。当然也有例外的情况。比如备中清江的刀匠以及丰后国行平等人，可能是因为处于只制作太刀的时代的关系，将铭刻在了刀的铭所刻的地方，因此这种刻“刀铭”的太刀，铭是刻在内侧的。在“新刀期”的肥前国忠吉一派还有刻有“太刀銘”的刀。此外，当太刀在磨过后变短，只能作为刀使用的时候，哪怕有太刀铭也同样称其为刀。

2，请看下图，从制造法（造込）来分类，是指把太刀、刀、短刀等以外形来分类。大半的太刀、刀是镐造，短刀是平造。凡是镐造的上品，有以下三个条件：“不弯、不折、善切”。可以说这种铸造形式，合理地满足了这几个相矛盾的要求。切刃造（きりはづくり）是一种古老的形式。正仓院的大刀和伊勢神宮的刀剑都是这种形态。锋两刃造（きっさきもろはづくり）在这里是用短刀的照片来表现的。在正仓院有作为平家重宝的代表性遗物“小乌丸”。两刃造（もろはづくり）是以剑为代表的造法，正如字面意义，刃是两面的。冠落造（かんむりおとしづくり）：除了刀尖和茎部以外中间的部分打造得极其纤细，主要是为了美观。おそらく造，是幕末名工源清麿的名作。
