Thank you for your enquiry. There are six knives that are produced to become a mastersmith. You can see what this range of knives would look like from a master here:

One is used in a performance test that is destructive. As in Ed’s test, you can see that this knife is bent to 90 degrees and therefore “destroyed”. The remaining five knives are part of the subjective test. These are generally considered to be the five most collectible knives of a maker’s career. In general, the maker will have spent significantly longer working on these – making them as perfect as possible, as they will be judged. One knife must be a quillion dagger. This is the centerpiece of the mastersmith set and is generally considered to be the most collectively knife of a maker’s career. The other four knives should be relatively diverse are a up to the prospective master’s choosing. These five knives are judged by the other masters of fit, finish, and style to determine if the candidate can be honored by receiving their mastersmith stamp.
